How does squirrel control work?

Our squirrel control Manchester service starts with a survey of the roofline, loft and outside of the property to find how the squirrels are getting in. Gaps around fascias, soffits, eaves and air vents are the usual entry points.
A BPCA-trained technician then removes the squirrels and proofs the entry points once they have gone, so they cannot get back in. Proofing too early can trap squirrels inside, so the order matters.
Squirrel control Manchester - a grey squirrel

Signs you have squirrels

Grey squirrels move into lofts for shelter and to raise their young, often in late winter and early summer.

Noise in the daytime

Scratching, running and thumping in the loft, mostly in the early morning and late afternoon. Rats and mice are more active at night.

Shredded insulation

Squirrels tear up loft insulation, paper and fabric to build a nest, called a drey.

Chewed timber and cables

They gnaw constantly. Chewed electrical cables in a loft are a fire risk.

Damage to the roofline

Chewed fascias, soffits and gaps at the eaves where they get in and out.

Seen on the roof

Squirrels running along the roof, gutters or overhanging branches to reach the house.

Know your squirrel

The grey squirrel was brought to Britain from North America in the 19th century and is now common across Greater Manchester. It is classed as an invasive species, and it is against the law to release a grey squirrel back into the wild once it has been caught. That is one reason squirrel removal is a job for a professional.
Squirrel control is part of our full pest control Manchester service, so the same team can deal with any other pests you find.

Squirrel Control Manchester FAQs

How do I know if it is squirrels or rats in my loft?
Squirrels are mostly active in the daytime, especially early in the morning, while rats and mice are mostly heard at night. Squirrels also leave larger droppings and shredded insulation.
Can I trap a squirrel and release it somewhere else?
No. The grey squirrel is classed as an invasive species, and it is against the law to release one back into the wild once it has been caught.
Are squirrels in the loft dangerous?
They can be. Squirrels chew electrical cables, which is a fire risk, and they damage timber, insulation and water pipes.
How do you stop squirrels coming back?
Once the squirrels have gone we proof the entry points, such as gaps at the eaves, fascias and air vents, and advise on cutting back branches that give them a route onto the roof.
How much does squirrel control cost in Manchester?
It depends on the size of the property and how established the problem is. Call 0161 210 2536 for a quote. Commercial work is quoted after a survey.
